Couples finding themselves in the middle of divorce proceedings are growing in number each year. Some studies are showing that over 50% of first time marriages will end in divorce, with subsequent marriages ending at even higher percentages! That means a lot of people looking for the expertise of divorce lawyers.
However, is there really a need for the hiring of an attorney? There are no written laws or requirements that state a divorce must be handled by lawyers. Many times, hiring a lawyer and doing none of the divorce work yourself can lead to tens of thousands of dollars in legal fees.
Women need to look out for their best interests when it comes to a divorce, though. Many times, emotions might get in the way of good judgment, and when children are involved, a lack of good judgment can be detrimental. So, with a little research, finding a balance between a doing some of the leg work yourself and using a lawyer may be just what is needed.
Sometimes, there are legal issues involved with divorce that women may not be aware of. This is where a lawyer can come in handy. They are prepared and trained to look for these legal issues, while also being able to handle transferring the ownership of personal property from one spouse to the other. When the marriage has lasted many years, there is also the possibility of assets becoming so “mixed up” that both parties need help untangling them. If missed, and the “do it yourself” divorce is finalized, it will be much more difficult to change what has been ordered by the court.
For anyone facing a divorce, the hiring of an attorney is an important step. Some things to remember, though, are:
Divorce must be thought of from a business standpoint. Women, more than men, may find that to be difficult, but it can be done. The more emotions can be kept out of the process, the more quickly, fairly and inexpensively the divorce settlement can be reached.
