A Perfect Couple’s Getaway On The Jersey Shore At Avon-By-The-Sea, NJ

As a Manhattanite going to the Jersey shore, it always seemed like second or third choice until I discovered Avon-By-The-Sea. This is a small, relatively unknown area of the Jersey shore that I am happy to recommend to others, as a result of my own experiences in this beautiful little town.

It is an especially nice place to go to get away from all those pesky New Yorkers whom you have to deal with all week long. The crowd at Avon-By-the-Sea is typically non-Manhattan.

The Cashelmara Inn Bed and Breakfast By-The-Sea was originally built as a summer house by William G. Wilcox, who was a prominent United States statesman, nearly a century ago. The estate has the Atlantic Ocean on one side of the house and a seaside lagoon on the reverse.

Even though the house is almost a century old, it has been beautifully restored for year-around use. A really nice feature is that it is open for business whenever you need to get away from the hustle and bustle of the Big Apple.

My husband and I like to go to Avon-By-The-Sea in the fall, when the town is nearly empty and we have it all to our selves. Keep in mind, stores and restaurants are limited during the fall and winter months, but there is enough year-around businesses there to keep the trip enjoyable.

The restorations at the Cashelmara Inn Bed and Breakfast are accurate and true to the time period it was built. This creates an atmosphere that is impossible to duplicate and I have never seen anywhere else, in all of my extensive travels.

This Victorian style home creates an atmosphere of relaxation. As soon as you walk in the front door, your tempo begins to slow and relaxation begins.

The rooms are not large enough for a family of five, but they are adequate for a couple. An added advantage is that all rooms have a private bath. The individual rooms continue the Victorian-charm that is seen throughout the house. Not all rooms have an ocean-view, but common sitting areas on the main floor have an excellent view of the ocean and a shaded area to sit and enjoy the cool winds blowing in from the Atlantic Ocean.

Some rooms have a fireplace and Jacuzzi. If you are there in the summer which is prime time, a fireplace is not needed unless you want to set up a couple of candles – instead of a roaring fire. A Jacuzzi is not required either, but I simply cannot resist the Jacuzzi when I find it. I can literally spend a weekend in the Jacuzzi, but at the Cashelmara Inn, the ever-present scent of fresh ocean breezes are always calling me outside into open air…

Cashelmara Inn has a Grand Victorian Cinema. It is really just a small screening room, but it has comfortable sitting for 10-12 adults. There are two shows nightly and a THX surround sound system. Usually only about two or three couples show up unless it is raining outside. Do not expect to watch Star Wars or a movie currently in the theatres, but do expect to watch a classic or a black and white movie every other night.

Rates at this beautiful bed and breakfast are not expensive, when you consider the cost of a resort hotel and the wonderful ocean views. During peak season rates run from $180 to $375 per night depending on the size of your room. Rooms classified as medium are $206 per night and are adequate for a weekend stay. If you are planning a longer stay, you should consider the large rooms or even a suite. As an additional benefit, all rooms have air conditioning and WiFi.

Beach badges are also included with each room. For those who have never been to the Jersey shore, a beach badge is required to go on to the beach and are usually pretty expensive. The activities at the Cashelmara Inn Bed and Breakfast are geared toward relaxation. If you are so inclined, there is a near-by boardwalk, the beach, bicycles and off-shore fishing available to anyone visiting Avon-By-The-Sea.

Overall, this is a great place for couples to spend a nice quite weekend. But, I would not recommend this vacation destination for singles or the Hampton crowd. My husband and I leave the kids with our in-laws, and we take the time to go down to Jersey, whenever we need a break from our hectic daily lives, and the Cashelmara Inn Bed and Breakfast and Avon-By-The-Sea are favorite destinations.
